(Railways Africa) – Galison Manufacturing, a South African-based industry leader in the manufacture and supply of railway freight wagons and mining equipment, is pleased to announce the successful completion of an order for 50 lightweight dual-purpose wagons for a major logistics company operating between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia.
The order, awarded in mid-2023, involved the manufacture of lightweight wagons, each capable of carrying both containers and non-containerised cargo such as copper and sulphur in bags with high sides fitted. A key feature of these wagons is the construction from high-strength steel, reducing the tare weight to under 15 tonnes to optimise load-carrying capacity. Additionally, the wagons were engineered with constant contact side friction bogies, enhancing handling and minimising risks such as derailments and wheel wear.
The wagons were built at Galison’s ISO 9001/2015 certified, state-of-the-art facility in Welkom, which features modern automated manufacturing equipment, including high-definition plasma cutting, computerised chassis drilling, and robotic welding.
“With the completion of this project, Galison Manufacturing’s products have once again proven essential in tackling complex logistical challenges within the rail sector, while maintaining the highest standards of quality and innovation. This success underscores our commitment to our customers as they seek to enhance regional logistics and growth within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region,” says Andrew Thorburn, CEO of Galison.
